Strazdumuiza Wind Orchestra

About the collective
The Strazdumuiža Brass Band is one of the oldest brass bands in Latvia, founded in 1900. It has an interesting history of development, having played at concerts, green balls, funeral ceremonies and other events. For 50 years, from 1945 to 1995, the orchestra was led by Voldemārs Sulainis, a talented blind music teacher and multi-instrumentalist. Under his leadership, the orchestra took part in festivals and competitions of all kinds. Even among the best brass bands in Latvia, prizes were won.
Now, since Armands Ozols is the director, the repertoire is more concert-oriented, with a varied programme including works by composers of different nations and genres. 2010. In 2010, the Latvian National Library’s Popular Music Festival awarded the Jury Prize for the best collective performance. Most of the participants are visually impaired, but there are many young people. There are 10 other members besides the leader. At larger events, 4-5 older members join. The ensemble is modern and very popular with the audience.
