IX WORLD DICTATE IN LATVIAN WILL TAKE PLACE ON 14 OCTOBER at the Latvian Society for the Blind club at 10:00. 12:15

THE IX WORLD DICTATION IN LATVIAN WILL TAKE PLACE ON 14 OCTOBER. Latvian Blind Society Club in Braila Street   4 Dictation will be available for people who need a slower dictation pace. People with visual impairments, dyslexia and other writing disabilities that require a slower dictation pace will be able to join in.

This year, the World Dictation in Latvian will take place on Saturday, 14 October, at 12.15. This will be the ninth time the World Dictation will take place,   and this year the text for the dictation was created by the writer Māris Bērziņš, while in Riga – by the Latvian Blind Society Club – it will be dictated Latvian Puppet  theatre actress Dace Vītola.

This year, as in previous years, the dictation will also be broadcast live on Latvian Radio 1, where those interested will be able to write down the dictation while listening to the radio and later compare their performance with the original text. At the same time, the dictation will also be broadcast on Latvian Television and on the lsm.lv website. Diktātam has started cooperation with the Latvian Society of the Blind and the Latvian Association of the Deaf to give blind, partially sighted, deaf and hard of hearing people the opportunity to try their hand at dictation. The exact locations of the in-person sessions will be announced in the coming weeks.

World Dictation in Latvian is a private initiative aimed at developing the Latvian language and strengthening its roots in today’s multicultural environment. In nine years, it has grown from a small event organised by language enthusiasts to an international project, with 2000 participants from 29 countries last year. Each year, a contemporary Latvian writer produces a text of around 300 words, dictated by a famous Latvian actor. This year, the writer Māris Bērziņš has been chosen as the dictator.

Participants will not be marked, and can take the dictation either by giving their name or anonymously, as the aim of the initiative is to give everyone the opportunity to assess their knowledge of Latvian spelling. The best participants will receive gifts from the dictation partners. Those who have taken the dictation in person will be able to find the corrections at the respective venues, while those who have completed the task online will be able to find the corrections on the website  www.raksti.org within a few months after the event.

The dictation will be checked and confirmed by Baiba Saulīte, a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Latvia.
