The members of the Latvian Society for the Blind Jūrmala TERITORIAL ORGANISATION are active and committed. In September, during the cottage-craft classes, they made flower boxes with their own hands, and a recipe book for people with visual disabilities is also in the process of creation.
For three months, residents of Jūrmala with vision problems – both visually impaired and blind – attended carpentry classes, where they learned new skills working with wood and various carpentry tools. It is admirable and seems almost impossible, but people with visual impairments worked with an electric screwdriver, a band saw, and each had his or her own craft so that no one felt left out. Of course, we had to encourage and help, and everything worked out.
As a result, four beautiful flower boxes were made with the hard-working hands of blind and visually impaired residents of Jurmala and presented to the pupils of the pre-school educational institution “Podziņa” in Jurmala during the celebration of the Knowledge Day.
“Children will be able to sow and plant flowers and other plants, and learn how to care for them,” says Anita Auziņa, head of the preschool “Podziņa”.
After the event, parents of kindergarten pupils joined in, solving various challenges, playing games and preparing healthy treats.
The cooperation of the Jūrmala branch of the Society for the Blind with Podziņa started a few years ago, and the satisfaction of joint activities is mutual. The members of the Society for the Blind are welcome guests at Podziņā and are called friends.
The Jūrmala branch of the Latvian Society for the Blind organised the carpentry classes in the project “Never give up!”; the project was co-financed by the Jūrmala municipality in the Citizens’ Initiative Project Competition for Public Integration.
Other activities are planned: people with visual impairments will learn how to cook different snacks so they can prepare their own festive meal and set the festive table. A recipe book for people with visual impairments is also in the pipeline.
Jūrmala residents with visual impairments are invited to join the Jūrmala branch of the Latvian Society for the Blind and participate in its activities. The Society works Kapteiņa Zolta iela 121, contact phone 22136368.
